How sources are chosen is not a secret: every source is scored on editorial quality, ad restraint, reach, signal-to-noise, access, cadence, design and independence, with the weights and per-source measurements published on the method page. The ranked list itself lives at /signal-500.
Why 498 and not 500: the name is the size of the selection, and a pack only carries sources with a live feed on the day it was built. When a selected source’s feed goes quiet or moves, it drops out of the pack until it is fixed or replaced, so the count sits at or just under 500 rather than exactly on it.
The catalog was built for FeedsBar, the Mac ticker that carries it. Take the packs anyway; that is what they are for.
Citing it? A dated snapshot of the catalog, as CSV and OPML with a data card, is archived at Zenodo under doi:10.5281/zenodo.22311917 (CC BY 4.0). That link always resolves to the latest snapshot. The same snapshot is mirrored on Hugging Face, where the CSV is browsable in the dataset viewer.
