The pool is every item published in September 2026 by the 35 sources in our Ideas & Longform pillar: 1,129 pieces. A person read the shortlist and picked these. Nothing on this page was generated from a score, and a month with nothing worth listing gets no page.
- Standalone essays only. Open threads, links roundups, reading lists, questionnaires, issue indexes and videos are all excluded, however good the publication.
- At most two per publication, so that one prolific feed cannot quietly become the list.
- A piece is only included if there is something real to say about it. Where a feed carries nothing but boilerplate, the piece is left out rather than given an invented description.
